Qualcomm recently launched its latest flagship chipset, which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. The launch event was dated for 3rd of December 2019, which also marked the launch of Snapdragon 765 & 765 5G chipsets which will power the mid-range smart phones which we will see in the upcoming year.
The Snapdragon 865 which is the successor to the Snapdragon 855 and 855+ chipsets, which were launched in the previous year and were used in powering many Flagship Smart phones this year. The Snapdragon 865 will see its presence in many upcoming Smart phones in 2020.
The Structure and Components:
The Snapdragon 865 SoC is an eight-core chipset based on TSMC’s 7nm N7P architecture which was also used to produce the then flagship chipsets, the Snapdragon 855 & Snapdragon 855+ and the same is used to make Apple’s A13 Bionic chipsets.
It uses the newer ARM Cortex-A77 cores, with the primary performance core using a Kryo 585 CPU clocked at 2.8GHz ,three Kryo 585 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and four Kryo 385 cores (based on Cortex-A55) clocked at 1.8GHz. The Adreno 650GPU supports up to 144 Hz refresh rate screens with up to QHD+ resolution. So, the heavy tasks like games and 4K videos will be handled by the prime core, slightly heavier tasks like photo editing will be handed by the mid-cores, while everything else will be processed by the efficiency cores.
The Spectra 480 ISP can support up to 200 megapixel main camera or a 64 megapixel camera with zero shutter lag. It can also support 25 megapixel dual cameras, 4K HDR video recording at 60 fps or 4K at 120 fps. It can also record 8K videos at 30 fps, and decoding 8K videos at 60 fps, and Slow-motion 960 fps video recording can still be done at 720p resolution.
Gain over Previous Chipsets:
The chipset offers up to 25% overall performance gain over the previous chipsets and 20% gain over the Graphics performance and rendering. One of the main areas of improvement in the chip is in AI. The Snapdragon 865 claims to have an AI engine twice as powerful as the Snapdragon 855, hitting 15 trillion operations per second.
Some New Things along with the Chipset:
Qualcomm also announced its next generation ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology called 3D Sonic Max. It’s said to offer a recognition area which is 17x larger than the previous generation and support for authentication of two fingers simultaneously.
A new Dolby Vision, which will enhance the screen viewing experience for the users, which enhances the colours in the screen making it look more punchier and increasing the colour depth.
The Gaming experience is also said to be enhanced with the new chipset which will now support games at 90Hz refresh rate.
5G Technology used:
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 brings support for 5G connectivity as standard, but it doesn’t have the support of integrated 5G modem, Qualcomm has said that the chipset will come bundled with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. Qualcomm promises of having about 7.5Gbps downloading speed and 3Gbps uploading speed.
When can we see the Chipset in Action?
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset is said to power the upcoming flagship smart phones which will most probably be releasing earlier in the MWC 2020. The leaks have said that the chipset will power the One Plus 8 and the 8 Pro (as the names might be), Google Pixel 5, Samsung Galaxy S11, Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro, LG G9 and many more smart phones in the coming year, among which the Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro is said to be the first Smartphone to be launched with the Snapdragon 865 SoC in March 2020.
